Buyers Beware: DotDigitalEarth.com Scam.

June 16, 2008

Jackass! We had a customer order a product from us that we didn’t have in stock. So, we did some browsing around the Internets to make sure our customer got their product on time. Low and behold we found it on DotDigitalEarth.com for well below what we pay at wholesale. Their reasoning for this? They do their billing in Europe, duh! I’m not sure if that was supposed to convince us that they are legit and able to sell products for so cheap but it didn’t - so we investigated further and contacted them.

From DotDigitalEarth.com
Dear Customer,

We have about 20 units on stock so there should be no problem.

Thank you for using our service,
Carolina Valdez,
Customer Service

From us:
We would like to order but want to be sure we can trust you. Can you please respond to this:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080614215519AADPHC3
And let us know why we can trust you. Thanks!

From DotDigitalEarth.com:

It is allways the COMPETITION!!

So please do not order from us and choose other stores. We have our own customers.Thank you!

I doubt the person who asked the question on Yahoo! Answers is their competition. Anyone who won’t allow you to place an order over the phone, pay with a credit card, and responds to potential customers like they did, probably shouldn’t be trusted.

We aren’t sure about this one but it meets the sketchy profile: http://www.electronicscult.com

One thing that has me really concerned about this fraud is the fact that they have HackerSafe on their site. Is this a legitimate HackerSafe seal? No, they are hosting a page on their site (http://dotdigitalearth.com/security/scanalert/rating.php) that mimics the HackerSafe page. It’s important to research a site before giving them your personal information and it’s equally important for the merchant to help customers easily find information that let’s them know they can be trusted. Customer confidence cannot be taken lightly.
