Mind sharing the specs on the servers you went with?

I manage 4 dedicated servers with rackspace, 1x Web/IIS, 1x M$ Sql, 1x Exchange and 1x LAMP. Pretty good support, top notch tier 1 network, N+1 redundant data center etc etc. All together around $8000/month. They're probably @ no more than 10% capacity (must have been a hell of a salesman ;-) ) http://www.andrewstallings.com/temp/fileserver.gif

I also manage a Windows/IIS/MySql VPS for another client which I spec'd and purchased myself. It's with a small company (Powervps), but is located at an even better data center (Equinix) and has even better support than rackspace. The longest I've had a ticket go unanswered is 13 minutes and I've even had their techs on the phone at 1am helping me work on my own scripts for hours (something that they really aren't responsible for). This one's about $150/month and they're nowhere close to capacity (but on a vps, even if they were to get a sudden spike, there would almost certainly be available resources it will "borrow")

Believe it or not, both of these clients actually get close to the same amount of traffic. Although price isn't really a concern for either, the bottom line is a vps is the best bang for the buck for the vast majority of people.

Then of course there are the shared servers, like my dreamhost account that I keep all my junk and personal stuff on. It's probably running at >300% capacity....imo these accounts aren't even an option for anything commercial.

I'm a big VPS fan in case you can't tell :-)

You should really try out Colo4Dallas instead. I live and work in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (where both the Planet and Colo4Dallas are located). My company was with the The Planet, but then they literally tripled their prices and fired all of their NOC techs all at once. We moved over to Colo4Dallas (as well as many other companies we found out) and couldn't have been happier. We actually had a few episodes of downtime at The Planet (when a UPS got overloaded and failed), but in 3 years have not had a minute of downtime at Colo4Dallas. I have personally been through both colo facilities (be given the grand sales tour) and if you see them in person, it is easy to see that the Planet spends its money on flash and looks (foosball table, free fancy coffee machine, expensive fancy cubes/desks for staff) where Colo4Dallas spends its money on proper infrastructure.
