Get indexed quickly: install Google Analytics!

February 25, 2008

We’ve had a flurry of activity lately–8 new sites up in a month. One thing we’ve noticed with new sites is that simply putting Google Analytics on them will result in Googlebot making a visit within 24 hours and your site will appear in the index (use the site: command) in about 48. With ZoomGiftBaskets.com, we uploaded the site yesterday, put Google Analytics on it around 5PM, and Googlebot was on the site this morning. No links, completely separate IPs, no Webmaster Central, nada–just Google Analytics installed on every page.

We’ve thought this for a while but putting sites up back to back has really made it more obvious. This would make sense as Google’s goal is to index the world’s data and their analytics code is installed on all over which makes their job of discovering information a whole lot easier. We didn’t take the time to put together a bunch of statistical data so this is just a theory based on our observations at this point.

Has anyone noticed any evidence to either support or debunk this?

I first noticed this last April when I put an eCommerce site online - it had no backlinks at all, but as soon as Google analytics was added it was indexed, and continued to be indexed on a regular basis.

Hi guys, I just wanted to comment on this for a second. No, using Google Analytics does not automatically get your site indexed in Google. There are already enough factors involved in crawling, indexing and ranking :-). However, using Google Analytics can certainly help you to make your site more compelling, which in turn can obviously help your site to gain value in all search engines, including Google. So don’t just add the Analytics code snippet, leverage the data that you gain access to and make your site fantastic!

    Hey John,

Thanks for the comment. Do you have any data to support the statement that adding the Google Analytics code won’t get your site indexed? We have noticed a recurring theme when we put the code on our site. None of the sites we observed had links to them and we didn’t submit them to Google. The only other thing that could be a contributing factor is the Google toolbar.

In regards to you comments on using Google Analytics to analyze our sites data, that was the catalyst for installing the code in the first place. The quick indexing may just be an added bonus.

Got something to say?
